Building a 6-Foot Fence
For a 6-foot fence, use 8-foot 4×4 (6×6 at gates and corners) posts set about 30 inches deep, spaced every 8 feet, with 3 horizontal rails per section and about 2 bags of 60 lb concrete per post. A 100-foot run works out to 16 posts (including one gate), 32 bags of concrete, 39 rails, and about 320 pickets if you use standard 3.5-inch boards.
Codes and permits: Six feet is the most common maximum height for back-yard fences in residential zones. Going taller usually requires a permit or variance.
