Question 1

How do I calculate how much fencing I need?

Accepted Answer

Measure the total perimeter you want to fence in linear feet. If you know your lot size, multiply the square footage by the appropriate factor: for a square lot, perimeter = 4 × √(square feet). Most homeowners fence three sides since the house covers the fourth.

Question 2

What is the standard spacing between fence posts?

Accepted Answer

For wood and vinyl fences, the standard is 8 feet on center (measured from the center of one post to the center of the next). Chain link fences use 10-foot spacing for line posts. Shorter spacing (6 feet) provides extra strength in high-wind areas.

Question 3

How deep should fence posts be set?

Accepted Answer

The general rule is to bury 1/3 of the total post length. For a 6-foot fence, use 8-foot posts with 2 feet underground. The hole should be 10-12 inches in diameter. In areas with frost, dig below the frost line (typically 36-48 inches).

Question 4

How many bags of concrete do I need per fence post?

Accepted Answer

Plan on 2 bags of 60-pound Quikrete per post for standard 4×4 posts in a 10-inch wide, 24-inch deep hole. For 6×6 posts or deeper holes, use 3 bags per post. Fast-setting concrete is recommended so you can attach rails within 20-40 minutes.

Question 5

What size fence posts should I use?

Accepted Answer

4×4 posts are standard for fences up to 6 feet tall. Use 6×6 posts for gates, corners, end posts, and fences over 6 feet. Corner and gate posts bear extra stress, so upgrading to 6×6 at those points is good practice even for shorter fences.

Question 6

How many pickets do I need per foot of fence?

Accepted Answer

For 1×4 (3.5-inch) pickets with a standard 1/4-inch gap: about 3.2 pickets per linear foot. For 1×6 (5.5-inch) pickets with 1/4-inch gap: about 2.1 pickets per foot. Multiply by your total fence length and add 10% for waste.

Question 7

What is the cheapest type of fence to build?

Accepted Answer

Chain link is the most affordable at $8-$15 per linear foot for materials. Split rail and post-and-rail fences are next at $8-$18 per foot. Wood privacy fencing runs $15-$25 per foot, while vinyl ($20-$35) and aluminum ($25-$40) cost the most upfront but require less maintenance.

Question 8

How long does a wood fence last?

Accepted Answer

A properly installed and maintained pressure-treated wood fence lasts 15-20 years. Cedar and redwood can last 20-25 years. Regular staining or sealing every 2-3 years significantly extends lifespan. Posts rot first, so treating the buried portion or using post brackets can add years.

Question 9

How long does a vinyl fence last?

Accepted Answer

Vinyl fences typically last 20-30 years or more. They resist rot, insects, and weathering. The main risk is impact damage (vinyl can crack in extreme cold). No painting, staining, or sealing required – just occasional washing with a garden hose.

Question 10

Do I need a permit to build a fence?

Accepted Answer

Most municipalities require a building permit for fences over 4 feet tall in the front yard or over 6 feet in the back yard. Check your local building codes before starting. You may also need a survey to confirm property lines. HOA communities often have additional fence restrictions.

Question 11

How much does it cost to install a fence per foot?

Accepted Answer

DIY material costs range from $8 (chain link) to $40 (aluminum) per linear foot. Professional installation adds $5-$15 per foot for labor. A 150-foot wood privacy fence: about $2,250-$3,750 DIY or $3,750-$6,000 professionally installed.

Question 12

What is the best fence for privacy?

Accepted Answer

A 6-foot wood privacy fence (board-on-board or solid board) provides the most privacy at a reasonable cost. Vinyl privacy panels are another excellent option with zero maintenance. For maximum privacy, consider board-on-board construction, which eliminates gaps between pickets entirely.

Question 13

Can I install a fence myself?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A basic wood privacy fence is one of the most popular DIY projects. You need a post hole digger (manual or rental auger), level, string line, tape measure, circular saw, and drill. Most homeowners complete 50-100 feet per weekend day. The hardest part is digging post holes – consider renting a two-person auger.

Question 14

How do I calculate the number of fence panels I need?

Accepted Answer

Divide your total fence length by the panel width. Standard wood panels are 8 feet wide; vinyl panels are also typically 8 feet. For 100 feet of fence: 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, round up to 13 panels. If using pre-built panels, you may need to trim the last panel to fit.

Question 15

What is the difference between a 4×4 and 6×6 fence post?

Accepted Answer

A 4×4 post is actually 3.5" × 3.5" and is the standard for most residential fences up to 6 feet tall. A 6×6 (actually 5.5" × 5.5") is stronger and used for gates, end posts, corners, and tall fences. 6×6 posts cost about twice as much but provide significantly more strength.

Question 16

How far apart should fence rails be?

Accepted Answer

For a 6-foot privacy fence with 3 rails: top rail 6 inches from the top, bottom rail 6 inches from the bottom, middle rail centered between them (about 30 inches from each). For a 4-foot fence with 2 rails: top rail 6 inches from the top, bottom rail 6-8 inches from the bottom.

Question 17

Should I use nails or screws for fence pickets?

Accepted Answer

Screws are recommended over nails. Use 1-5/8" or 2" exterior-grade screws (ceramic-coated or stainless steel). Nails tend to work loose over time as wood expands and contracts. Ring-shank nails are acceptable if you prefer nails. Use 2 fasteners per rail connection (6 per picket on a 3-rail fence).

Question 18

How much does a fence gate cost?

Accepted Answer

A standard 3-4 foot walk gate kit costs $75-$200 for wood and $150-$350 for vinyl. Double drive gates (for vehicles) run $200-$500 for wood. Add $30-$60 for heavy-duty hinges and a self-closing latch. Each gate requires 2 additional posts, which adds about $50-$80 in posts and concrete.

Question 19

How do I account for slopes in my fence?

Accepted Answer

Two methods: stepped (panels stay level and step down with the slope) or racked (panels follow the slope angle). Stepped is easier for DIY and works with pre-built panels. Racked requires cutting pickets at an angle. For slopes over 1 foot per 8-foot section, stepped is usually the better choice.

Question 20

What is the best time of year to build a fence?

Accepted Answer

Late spring through early fall is ideal. Ground should be thawed and not waterlogged. Avoid building in extreme heat (concrete cures too fast) or freezing temperatures (concrete may not set properly). Many homeowners get the best material prices in late winter/early spring before the building season rush.

Question 21

How do I maintain a wood fence?

Accepted Answer

Clean annually with a pressure washer on low setting or a deck/fence cleaner. Apply a water-repellent stain or sealer every 2-3 years. Replace damaged pickets promptly to prevent further damage. Keep soil and mulch away from the base of posts. Trim vegetation that touches the fence.

Question 22

What is the average lifespan of different fence types?

Accepted Answer

Pressure-treated wood: 15-20 years. Cedar/redwood: 20-25 years. Vinyl: 20-30+ years. Aluminum: 30-50 years. Chain link: 15-25 years. Split rail (cedar): 20-30 years. Wrought iron: 50-100 years. Lifespan depends heavily on climate, soil conditions, and maintenance.
