5 Foot Fence Calculator

Five feet is a middle ground: tall enough to stop most dogs and give partial privacy when you are seated, but lower and cheaper than a full privacy fence.

Building a 5-Foot Fence

For a 5-foot fence, use 8-foot 4×4 posts set about 30 inches deep, spaced every 8 feet, with 3 horizontal rails per section and about 2 bags of 60 lb concrete per post. A 100-foot run works out to 16 posts (including one gate), 32 bags of concrete, 39 rails, and about 320 pickets if you use standard 3.5-inch boards.

Codes and permits: Five feet is usually allowed in back and side yards without special approval, but often exceeds front-yard limits.
