Post & Rail Fence Calculator
Post-and-rail fencing is the cleaner, more finished cousin of split rail. Smooth or rough-sawn rails are nailed or bolted to the face of the posts in a straightforward pattern. Available in 2, 3, or 4-rail configurations at 3–5 feet tall. Popular for horse properties, ranch boundaries, and large acreage where privacy is not needed.

Advantages
- Very affordable ($8–$15/ft)
- Fastest fence to install
- Works well for large acreages
- Clean, ranched aesthetic
- Easy to repair—replace individual rails
Considerations
- No privacy or security
- Will not contain small animals
- Requires treatment or staining for longevity
- Limited aesthetic variety
Installation Tip
Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners to prevent rust stains on the wood. For horse properties, attach boards to the inside of posts so horses push against posts, not rails. Space posts exactly 8 feet on center for standard rail lengths.
