Pool Fence Calculator: Barrier Materials & Cost

A pool fence is a safety barrier first and a design feature second. Many local codes are based on the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which commonly calls for a barrier at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. Always confirm your local rules before buying materials.

Common code requirements

Typical requirements include a minimum height of 48 inches, openings small enough that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through, no footholds that make the fence easy to climb, and gates that open outward away from the pool, close on their own, and latch automatically. Latch release mechanisms are often required to sit at least 54 inches above the ground.

Why aluminum is the popular choice

Aluminum panels are made with picket spacing designed to meet common pool codes, they do not rust, and they keep the pool visible from the house so you can supervise swimmers. Vinyl works well when you want privacy, but check that horizontal rails are not climbable from the outside.

Measuring a pool fence

Measure the full path of the barrier, not the pool itself. Most homeowners keep 4 to 5 feet of deck between the water and the fence, so a 16×32 ft pool often needs 110 to 140 feet of fence plus one or two gates.

Example: 120 Feet of Aluminum

A typical pool fence of 120 feet using aluminum fencing needs about 23 posts (including one gate) and 46 bags of concrete, with materials around $3,000–$4,800. Change the length and type in the calculator above to match your project.
